URV breaks the silence on suicide in Tarragona with a pioneering prevention program

Rovira i Virgili University (URV) has launched a pioneering program to address suicide prevention in the university context, breaking the silence on a reality that particularly affects young people between the ages of 20 and 35. Under the name "Openly, we talk about the darkest moments", the pilot project aims to identify warning signs and combat the myths surrounding suicidal behavior. The initiative, led by the Department of Pedagogy and with the collaboration of specialized entities such as Papageno, ACPS, and APSAS, includes workshops and surveys addressed to students, faculty, and administrative staff to raise awareness and provide training on how to act in potential cases of risk.

The training sessions emphasize the importance of talking openly about suicide as a preventive measure, debunking erroneous ideas such as the belief that those who express it just want attention. Professors like Carme García, researcher in the Social Impact and Education research group at the Department of Pedagogy, recognize the value of the program in acquiring practical tools and raising awareness about the closeness of the problem. Professor Janaina Minelli, member of the Social Impact and Education research group at the Department of Pedagogy and project leader, highlights the crucial role education plays in prevention, beyond the healthcare field. Additionally, URV is working on implementing a specific guide from the Generalitat to address suicide at universities.
