URV and Repsol promote science clubs for young people from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds

Rovira i Virgili University (URV), in collaboration with Repsol, is launching for the fourth consecutive year the IncluSTEAM project, an initiative that promotes science clubs aimed at students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. The main objective is to bring STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) disciplines closer to 1st and 2nd year secondary school students who, due to their context, have fewer opportunities to develop scientific vocations. The program, implemented in three educational centers in the Tarragona region, aims to foster equality of opportunities, combat school dropout, and strengthen competencies such as teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking.

The science clubs, designed as extracurricular activities with eight sessions between January and May, offer practical and real experiences through methodologies such as inquiry-based learning and engineering design. The initiative is coordinated by the scientific outreach area of URV and evaluated by researcher Maite Novo from the IMSE, Social Impact and Education research group in the Department of Pedagogy. These types of programs not only stimulate interest in STEAM but also aim to increase the scientific capital of adolescents at risk of social exclusion and open new doors for their academic and professional futures.
