DISSEMINATION

Inaugural Conference of the 21st Meeting of Roma Female Students of Catalonia.

On May 28th, the 21st Meeting of Roma Female Students of Catalonia was held in Amposta, organized by the Drom Kotar Mestipen association, with the support of the Department of Social Rights of the Government of Catalonia.

The opening conference was given by Associate Professor Carme Garcia Yeste, a member of the MEDIS research group (since 2023 IMSE, Social Impact and Education), with an extensive research background in overcoming inequalities in vulnerable groups, paying special attention to the Roma community as an ethnic minority suffering from severe discrimination. In her conference, Dr. Garcia Yeste presented the scientific evidence of social impact that is contributing to reversing this reality, such as family involvement in educational and training actions, and its impact on improving academic results for children. The presentation reflected on the responsibility of educational institutions in ensuring the right to quality education for all children, regardless of their ethnic group. At the same time, it was discussed how important it is to have the tools to offer successful educational actions, such as family training, where research increasingly provides evidence of the benefits it brings to the entire community in overcoming inequalities.

During the event, nearly 100 Roma women reflected, debated, and agreed on how to achieve educational success and high academic expectations for all Roma women and their families. This meeting, held for the first time in Terres de l'Ebre and Montsià, was highly impactful for the women from that region and the other participants.
