Project IncluSTEAM broadcast on Radio Ciutat de Tarragona
In late March, the IncluSTEAM project was introduced on Radio Ciutat de Tarragona. This project is led by the MEDIS research group, along with the URV Divulga group, the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution (IPHES), and funded by Repsol. Coordinated by researcher Maite Novo Molinero, the project aims to bring science closer to young people from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and at risk of social exclusion.
The first edition of IncluSTEAM started in September 2021 and is expected to end at the end of June 2022. However, the MEDIS research group has already carried out similar initiatives, backed by the international scientific community with social impact, aimed at fostering scientific vocations in young people who are vulnerable and distanced from the world of science.
The project is based on two approaches carried out through concrete and dynamic actions. These are based on dialogue, collaboration, and teamwork. Thus, on one hand, scientific thinking is promoted through specific cases where they learn to analyze situations, enhancing decision-making, and on the other hand, activities that encourage engineering design to develop scientific competence.
IncluSTEAM applies a methodology recognized by the scientific community and is based on the idea of science clubs, a learning strategy to increase students' interest in science. The project is aimed at 1st and 2nd-year secondary school students from educational institutions located in high-vulnerability contexts, with the goal of awakening scientific vocations in these young people and fostering the high expectations that will help them escape their situation of exclusion.
