EDUCAROM Learning Space for young people in vulnerable situations in Reus

The consolidated research group IMSE: Social Impact and Education, together with the Educational Environment Plan of the Reus City Council and the Roma University Network of Catalonia - Campus Rom, have been promoting the intersectoral EDUCAROM Learning Space programme since the 2022-2023 academic year.

This programme aims to reduce early school dropout and improve academic performance by expanding quality educational opportunities outside school hours. It is an initiative that acts as an extension of learning time and promotes more inclusive and equitable educational environments.

The Learning Space is part of the European SCIREARLY[1] project, developed within the framework of the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. It is an inclusive educational measure that offers learning support activities and complementary classes outside school hours, with a special emphasis on improving linguistic competence in Catalan, the vehicular language of the educational system in Catalonia, to ensure quality education and successful academic pathways.

The project is aimed especially at young people in vulnerable situations, whether due to learning difficulties or a lack of support resources in their environment. Through the support of volunteer adults, they are offered a safe and motivating environment to reinforce learning and promote academic success.

Currently, the Learning Space takes place in the city of Reus and serves young people from various secondary schools, a Residential Centre for Educational Action (CRAE), and a centre for unaccompanied foreign minors. It is intended for students from 1st to 4th year of ESO who show interest in studying and wish to receive academic support outside school hours.

The project is managed by a team of volunteers, who receive specific training from the IMSE group, based on scientific evidence on the creation of successful learning environments. All volunteers commit to following a code of ethics that outlines the principles and criteria of action of the Learning Space.
